Cornea Surgery

What is the Cornea?

The cornea is the clear, outer window on the front of the eye and plays an important role in focusing light and images into the eye. Without a clear cornea, your vision may be blurry.

Some conditions that can affect the clarity of the cornea are:

  • Corneal dystrophies such as Fuch's dystrophy and anterior basement membrane dystrophy
  • Corneal scarring from trauma or infection
  • Keratoconus
  • Severe Dry Eye
  • Pterygium

How is the Cornea Treated?

Techniques to improve corneal clarity include treatment of dry eye, polishing of the corneal surface, and use of specialized contact lenses. In some instances, corneal transplantation may be required to provide the best vision. Our physicians at Aiken Ophthalmology are trained to offer the most advanced treatments to help improve your vision including the use of minimally invasive corneal transplant procedures such as DMEK and DSEK.
